The coastal waters of Timor-Leste are a global hot spot for cetaceans. Join us during the annual pygmy blue whale migration through these pristine waters.
Once a year, in October/November, a huge number of migrating pygmy blue whales pass by the shores of Timor-Leste.
The coastal waters are considered a global hot spot for cetaceans, with at least one third of all known whale and dolphin species found in these waters.
Far off the beaten track, here – early mornings and the gentle coastal breeze set the tone for the days, as we head off in search for the passing marine life.
Additionally, neighboring islands offer some of the most unique and diverse coral reefs on the planet to dive on – an incredible view of the underwater world this area holds the key to.
Arrive at Dili International Airport. Transfer to accommodation. Evening welcome briefing with expedition leaders. 🙂
Early morning boat departure. Head to known blue whale corridors along the migration route. Marine briefing on whale behaviour and safety protocols.
Explore the waters around Atauro Island, known for super-pods of dolphins and diverse cetacean gatherings. Multiple species encounters likely.
Full day dedicated to whale encounters. The deep waters off Timor-Leste drop away rapidly, bringing pelagic species close to shore.
Participate in photo-ID research. Specialist photography sessions with our marine photography team.
Last expedition day on the water. Farewell dinner sharing highlights and images from the trip.
Transfer to airport for departures.
